Last Stand was a rapidly developed prototype developed for mobile in Unity, which was the first time I was challenged to make a game from scratch (as opposed to expanding on a project from a Tutorials). It was made in 10 consecutive days, with a blog written at the end of each day found on gamejolt.
The game built on a match three mechanic, but the various colours you could match each had meaning. They contributed to different ways for you to defend your castle, which could be attacked from four different directions. By matching colours, you would fill up the associated ability bar. The defensive abilities you could use grew stronger the longer you charged them up; if you were patient you could charge up the ability to max level to unleash a strong defensive ability.
The aim was to put pressure on the player to have to focus on the defensive situations whilst simultaneously playing match 3. It also intended to give players a reason to search for specific colour matches, rather than matching any colours they saw mindlessly. Along with matching defensive abilities, the addition of negative tokens on tiles meant that certain tiles you’d want to avoid matching too, else you’d trigger enemy reinforcements.
I really liked this project and have considered fleshing it out further. I would like to rework the UI and have it played on PC – allowing the castle to house the “match 3” section of the game. Thematically, instead of tiles, I planned to have people wearing different coloured clothes represent the tiles. Thematically, the king would be organising his people so they can go and perform specific duties whilst their castle was under siege.
