A card-based combat game, pitting a cast of charming adventuring cats against the deviant rats of Cattenburg. Made for LD47 with Brainoid & Spacey3D.

Cattenburg was probably a best-received game jam game made for Ludum Dare. Spacey3d, despite the name, was looking to do 2D work. When combining this with exploring a card-combat mechanic that Brainoid had imagined up, we were able to create a beautifully illustrated card game with an original drawing mechanic. To fit with the nature of the jam, we added a “classic board game” feel by having a board that was traversed by rolling dice.

There were some pain points with the original card mechanic we implemented, such as frequently encountering cards that were no longer useful as the fight progressed. The “monopoly” mechanic of circling a board also caused some issues, as landing on the tiles that were required to trigger the boss was purely luck based – meaning some runs could take an age to get to the boss.

We were really happy with how this game came together. It was super well polished and combining spacey’s art with the tech art to get them 3d cards. We decided to continue to explore if Cattenburg could be expanded to be a deck-builder with a darkest dungeon style party gathering / persistence. Coming SOON!

A trailer created by Brainoid shortly after publishing the game.
A more-recent let’s play from a charity stream in 2021.
